Iroquois County Marriage License Process

The steps for getting a marriage license in Iroquois County follow state law. Both people go to the clerk's office. Bring your IDs. Complete the application and pay the required fee. The clerk gives you the license that same visit, but it does not take effect right away.

Illinois has a 24-hour waiting period. The ceremony cannot happen on the same day the license is issued in Iroquois County. After the 24 hours pass, the license is valid for 60 days. If the wedding does not take place within those 60 days, the Iroquois County license expires and you would need to reapply. The license is only valid for ceremonies held within Iroquois County. After the wedding, the officiant signs the license and returns it to the Iroquois County Clerk. At that point, the signed document becomes the official marriage record.

No blood test is required. Illinois eliminated that rule years ago.

Marriage Record Copies in Iroquois County

You can request copies of Iroquois County marriage records by going to the clerk's office in Watseka or by sending a written request through the mail. Certified copies have the county seal on them. These are the ones you need for legal purposes such as name changes, immigration applications, or insurance claims. A plain copy without the seal works for personal reference but is not accepted by most agencies.

Under 410 ILCS 535, the Illinois Vital Records Act sets rules for who can get certified copies. The people named on the marriage certificate, their parents, children, or legal agents are all eligible. Someone with notarized written consent from a named party can also make the request. Iroquois County follows these state guidelines. Bring a valid photo ID when you visit or include a copy with your mail request. For mail requests, send a check or money order made out to the Iroquois County Clerk along with a self-addressed stamped envelope.

The Illinois Department of Public Health can confirm that a marriage took place in the state but does not give out certified copies. For a certified copy of an Iroquois County marriage record, contact the county clerk.

Note: Call the Iroquois County Clerk at (815) 432-6960 to confirm the current fee for copies before you make the trip or send a payment.

These copies may carry a stamp noting they are for genealogy use only. The Iroquois County Clerk can let you know what older records they hold and what the copy fees are.

Marriage License Rules for Iroquois County

State law sets the rules for marriage licenses. These apply in Iroquois County just like they do in every other county in Illinois. The key requirements include:

  • Both people must be at least 18, or 16-17 with parental consent
  • Both must show up at the clerk office in person
  • Valid photo ID with date of birth for each person
  • No residency requirement for Iroquois County or Illinois
  • Proof of divorce or death if a prior marriage ended
  • 24-hour waiting period before the ceremony

After the 24-hour wait, you have 60 days to hold the ceremony. If that time passes without a wedding, the Iroquois County license expires with no option to extend. The ceremony must take place within the county. Once the officiant signs and returns the license, it becomes a permanent marriage record at the Iroquois County Clerk office.
