Where Oak Lawn Marriage Licenses Are Issued

How to Get a Marriage License in Oak Lawn

Both people must go to the Cook County Clerk office together. No one can stand in for you, and mail applications are not accepted. Each person brings a valid photo ID. A driver's license, state ID, or passport all work. If either person has been married before, bring a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. Under 750 ILCS 5/203, both applicants need to be at least 18 years old. Minors aged 16 or 17 may apply with parental consent and a court order.

The license fee is $60. The Bridgeview branch near Oak Lawn takes cash, checks, and cards. You can begin the application online through the Cook County website to save time during your visit. After the clerk issues the license, you must wait 24 hours before it can be used for a ceremony. The license is valid for 60 days from the day after it was issued. You can only use a Cook County license for a wedding held in Cook County. If you plan to marry in a different county, you need a license from that county instead. No blood test is required, and Illinois has no residency rule for marriage licenses. Couples from other states can get a Cook County license and marry in Oak Lawn.

The IDPH can issue a marriage verification for $5, but this is not a certified copy. For a full certified copy of an Oak Lawn marriage certificate, you still need to go through the Cook County Clerk.

Oak Lawn Marriage Certificate Copies

You get certified copies of Oak Lawn marriage certificates from the Cook County Clerk. The first copy costs $15. Each extra copy at the same time is $4. These are official documents with a raised seal. Most agencies, courts, and insurance companies accept them.

You need the full names of both spouses and the date of the marriage to request a copy. The Illinois Vital Records Act under 410 ILCS 535/25 says only certain people can get a certified copy. That list includes the spouses on the record, their children, legal representatives, and anyone who has written notarized consent from one of the parties. If a record is 50 years old or more, genealogy researchers can get an uncertified copy labeled "For Genealogical Purposes Only." These copies cannot be used for legal matters but work fine for family history research.

For marriages from 1962 onward, the Illinois Department of Public Health can provide a verification letter for $5. That is not the same as a certified copy. For marriages before 1962, the county clerk is your only source. The Cook County Genealogy Online portal has older marriage records you can search for free from home, which is a useful starting point for Oak Lawn residents tracing family roots through Cook County marriage records.
